Trompe l'oeil

Trompe l'oeil, which means trick of the eye, is a two-dimensional representation that is so realistic looking that it appears to be 3-D. In this case, the architectural detailing of the pedestal and the faux molding appear to stand away from the canvas.
It is simple to create a stateliness to walls by defining panels above and below the chair rail. The same principle can be used with a faux wood, marble, or other textures and colors.
